Every year, inhabitants of Ndande, Senegal take part in a Sufi Muslim ceremony called Gamou-Ndande, combining nights of praying and chanting as well as traditionally animist ceremonies. One ceremony involves men descending a larger former well, called Kalom, which was the site of historic battles in Senegalese history. According to local historian Baye Niass, the well dates back to the 16th century. Today there is no water in the former well and it is used for ceremonial purposes. Niass says the well measure 36 meters in depth an 11m in diameter.

Hundreds of people in the state of Michoacan have taken up arms to defend their villages against drug gangs, a vigilante movement born of frustration at extortion, killings and kidnappings in a region wracked by violence.

The self-defense groups started to spring up in February to fight back against the Knights Templar drug cartel, which is extorting protection payments from cattlemen and lime growers, butchers and even marijuana growers. The federal government sees both the self-defense forces and the cartel as dangerous enemies. This week, residents of western Mexico towns who endured months besieged by the drug cartel are finally cheering the arrival of hundreds of Mexican army troops. Many of the vigilante squads disappeared with the arrival of the army, though they vow to take up arms again as soon as the soldiers leave.

LONDON—A brutal attack in broad daylight near a military barracks in London left one man dead and two suspects hospitalized Wednesday after a shootout with police. British Prime Minister David Cameron said the attack appeared to be terror related. The afternoon attack occurred in the southeast London neighborhood of Woolwich, just a few blocks from the Royal Artillery Barracks. One man was found dead and two men were shot by police and taken to separate London hospitals, Commander Simon Letchford said. One of the men was in serious condition, according to London Ambulance Service.

The dramatic music soared and tension increased as the finalists stood, waiting for the decision of who would be the champion of Season 16 of ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ The final two pairs were so close in the scoring during the last dances that only a single point separated them. Host Tom Bergeron read out each of their names, Kellie and Derek, Zendaya and Val, as the four took deep breaths and closed their eyes. One more moment of waiting and then, ‘The winners are Kellie and Derek!’

‘The Voice’ reduced its roster of finalists down to eight as it bid goodbye to Josiah Hawley of Team Usher and Kris Thomas of Team Shkira.
That leaves our rookie judges with just one contestant apiece in the competition. Meanwhile, veterans Blake Shelton and Adam Levine each continue on with three-person teams.

Barry Fey, the producer who made Colorado a destination for the biggest names in music, died Sunday at age 73.

“Barry Fey is one of the giants of a generation,” said William Dean Singleton, chairman and publisher of The Denver Post, and a close friend of Fey’s. “He brought the music scene to Colorado, and every part of the music scene you see here today has his fingerprints on it.

Several hundred persons are on hand at the Denver Coliseum at noon Sunday to buy tickets for the June 16 Rolling Stones concerts at the Coliseum. According to Barry Fey, promoter of the concerts, about 12,000 persons were at the Coliseum by 8:15 for the tickets that went on sale at 8. About 7,000 of them had spent the night waiting for tickets to go on sale, according to Denver police. The Rolling Stones will give two concerts, at 4 and 9 p.m. June 16.
